Cleopatra
USA, 1999  TV

Timothy Dalton, Leonor Varela, Billy Zane
Directed by Franc Roddam

Ascending to the throne at a mere seventeen years of age, Cleopatra ruled as Egypt's last pharaoh for twenty-two years. Easily winning the heart of Roman commander Julius Caesar, they embark on a two-month voyage down the Nile and quickly become devoted to each other. She bears him a child whom she calls Caesarion. Keeping a close eye on Caesar's ambitions to become emperor, Roman senators conspire to assassinate him. His death devastates Cleopatra. In her grief she turns to Mark Antony, Caesar's devoted associate. Their alliance angers the senate even more and war is declared on Egypt. Cleopatra and Marc Antony's fate becomes sealed in each other's arms as the Roman armies close in on Alexandria under the command of Octavianus.

Leonor Varela is perfect as an ambitious yet sensual Cleopatra in this modern epic TV-version of the classic tale. Based on the book "Memoirs of Cleopatra" by Margaret George.
