The Mummy
USA, 1999

Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, Arnold Vosloo
Directed by Stephen Sommers

Rousing, suspenseful and horrifying epic about an expedition of treasure-seeking explorers in the Sahara Desert in 1925. Stumbling upon an ancient tomb, the hunters unwittingly set loose a 3,000-year-old legacy of terror, which is embodied in the vengeful reincarnation of an Egyptian priest who had been sentenced to an eternity as one of the living dead.

It is often suggested that this film is a remake of the 1932 film "The Mummy" with Boris Karloff, but that is really not the case. The storyline has hardly anything in common with the original movie and the abundance of special effects make it a typical turn of the millenium product. In an interview director Stephen Sommers was quoted saying "Look I love the original, and there are some things that I want to keep. But I’d like to do a complete reworking and make a huge popcorn movie".
