Love in Karnak
غرام في الكرنك
Egypt, 1967

Farida Fahmy, Mahmoud Reda, Abdel Moneim Ibrahim
Directed by Aly Reda

Story of an up and coming Egyptian dance troup that wants to become famous. They work hard to lure the tourists away from the monuments and the tombs of the pharaohs.

As part of a series of government-sponsored movies centered around the Mahmoud Rida Troupe of Folkloric Arts that recycled traditional Egyptian song and dance forms, "Love in Karnak" is the first film in the series that abandons studio drawing room and nightclub sets for the great outdoors. As the title suggests, the movie features several scenes and dance performances among the ancient monuments in the Luxor/Karnak area, such as the Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari. There is even a Hollywood style back-in-time dream sequence in which lead dancer Mahmoud Rida fantasizes an encounter with Pharaoh on a lavish court set.
