La Corte de Faraón Spain, 1985 Antonio Banderas Directed by José Luis Sánchez    A troupe of Franco-era performers insist upon performing La Corte de Faraón, a forbidden work, and are promptly arrested. As the scantily clad female dancers bide their time in the police station, performing parts of the musical, they arouse the libido of the corrupt police chief--much to the chagrin of the church-appointed censor. The title and subject of the film refer to a musical by Vicente Lleó, with the llibretto by Guillermo Perrín and Miguel de Palacios. A blend of biblical pastiche, luscious vaudeville, erotics and Art Deco Egyptian chic, La corte del Faraón is a most sophisticated and audacious conception. So much so, indeed, that public performance of the original musical was banned by the Franco regime until as late as 1975.
